Route Details

Hasankeyf Castle and its canyons offer a discovery route combining historical and natural beauty. It is ideal to visit  especially during the spring and autumn months. During hot summer months, attention should be paid to adequate water consumption. This route is suitable for day hikes, canyon walks, and camping activities. It offers opportunities to observe the views of Hasankeyf Castle and the canyons, and enjoy nature.

The starting point of the hiking route, Karaköy, is accessible by vehicle at all times. The descent from the village to the canyon is a bit rocky for about 1 km. From the canyon towards the castle, you reach the Şeyh Sevenç Tomb. Water needs can be met from the fountain here. From the castle’s entrance gate, you can walk about 3 km around the castle, exploring the historical buildings and enjoying views of the Dicle River. After descending from the castle, you cross the ridge with the mint (Darphane) to reach a deep and magnificent canyon. From here, you proceed to the waterfall, passing by the view of submerged ruins of ancient Hasankeyf and Dicle River. Descending from the King’s Daughter Cave (Kral Kızı Mağarası) to the canyon, you reach the Crying Caves.

There are many historical structures and caves along this route. You can see and photograph all of them during short breaks while hiking.

Hasankeyf castle and canyon route is approximately 16 km from Karaköy to the Crying Caves. This hike generally takes 7-10 hours, depending on effort and breaks. A shorter alternative route, around 8 km, can be taken from the Şeyh Sevenç Tomb to the castle and then to the waterfall, which is suitable for all hikers.
